There is so much to say about Duke...he is the ultimate "shadow" dog! Duke will choose his person and he wants to be with that person all the time. He will also be with other people, but this one he wants to have in his sights at all time. Duke is currently in a foster home with 7 other littles, and has done well. He showed some marking behaviors early on but seems to have moved past that now. He is treat motivated as well as a little anxious at mealtime. He has learned pretty quickly to wait his turn (last) but he needed very strict routines to get used to that and it took about a week. Duke enjoys playing with toys as long as someone is playing with him. He's not interested in playing with his foster siblings...he wants a person. He loves to be held, and if the family is sitting down, he is sitting with them. His favorite position is on his back, sprawled out next to his person (see pictures...he's a comfy boy!). He gets excited when he sees his harness and leash and will run over excitedly to get ready to go. In the beginning, Duke was on a potty schedule, but quickly learned to use the doggie door. He will go into a kennel but does not like to be left inside when his people are present. At night, he much prefers to sleep on the bed. His previous owners indicated he does much better with women, and there are no men living in his foster home, but he has had no issues with men who have visited. He will bark with the rest of the pack but hasn't shown any aggression toward visitors. Duke has shown some guarding behaviors with his person, but only toward other pets in the house, not with any person. He will growl, and has lunged a couple of times, but his foster family does NOT consider this aggressive. He needs an owner willing to be alpha when this behavior is shown. He has responded well to a firm tone to draw his attention back. This little guy is an absolute joy and will do well in a home where someone is with him most of the time, a cozy bed is nearby when his person is busy and where he is allowed to be a lap dog. If you think you can provide him the love and stability he craves, please reach out to the rescue for more information.
